Good evening, Dear Readers!
When I think back to the various events that I remember, concerning my "journey towards God" - my conversion - my mind goes back to one Fall night in DaNang Airbase, 1972.
I was in my tiny room in the barracks, with my dog, Garfunkel - seems like 90% of the Vietnamese dogs were yellow, with a curly tail - dictating a cassette tape to loved ones back home. All of a sudden the base siren went off, and a voice over the loudspeaker blared "Rockets, rockets, rockets, DaNang is under attack." At that moment, I heard - and felt the concussion of - the first rocket landing. I dropped everything, grabbed my helmet and flak jacket, and flew under my bed; curling into a fetal position!
A second later, I heard and felt the second rocket landing; closer now, accompanied by a loud "crack!" Then a third rocket crashed right outside, with an enormous "Ceeraack!"; and I knew they were coming in a straight line......that ran straight through ME!!
At that moment, me " Mr. Agnostic, " looked up and prayed, "Please God, don't let the next one kill me; just let it hurt me!!"
That "next one" went over our heads and landed in the yard of the Base Chapel (where I'd never been!) I got up, without saying "Thanks", and went on with my business. A SAD state of affairs!
But I knew that I'd "called" on a God that I'd refused to believe existed!
Little did I know, that He'd also "begun calling to me"; and that "I'd be His" in a few short years!!
Wherever you are, "on YOUR journey".....I wish you, God-Speed!!
